1). The Material Transfer Agreement was signed between the Institut Pasteur du Laos (IPL), Ministry of Health, Lao PDR, and the Japan Institute for Health Security, Japan, on 11 October 2025.
2). Ethical approvals were granted by the National Ethics Committee for Health Research (NECHR) under Approval No. 01/NECHR, dated 16 January 2024, and Approval No. 19/NECHR, dated 28 February 2025.
Subject-matter or genetic resource(s)
  1. Freshwater snails (Bithynia siamensis and Neotricula aperla) were collected from 12 villages in Khong and Mounlapamok District, Champasak Province, Lao PDR.   
  2.  Malaria parasites (Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum) were obtained from dried blood samples of villagers in malaria-endemic areas of Nong District, Savannakhet Province

  • Non-Commercial
  1. The applicant is required to share research results and related publications with the local project partners and the Lao ABS authority to properly acknowledge the resource providers. 
  2. This permission is granted for the specified research only.
  3.  If further experiments on the resources or their digital sequence information are intended for commercialization purposes, the Japan Institute for Health Security, Japan, must notify the Lao ABS authority and the local partner to establish a new ABS agreement. 
  4. The applicant is required to acknowledge the country of origin of the genetic resources when generating or using digital sequence information (DSI) derived from those resources. 
 The collected samples mentioned above are not allowed to be provided to any third party without permission from the Lao ABS authority and the Institut Pasteur du Laos. 
Additional Information
  1.  Approximately 400 samples of freshwater snails (Bithynia siamensis and Neotricula aperta) preserved in 80% ethanol will be exported from the Lao PDR to the Department of Tropical Medicine and Malaria, National Center for Global Health and Medicine, Japan Institute for Health Security, Japan, for a study on the population genetics and epidemiology of trematode parasites using molecular biology techniques. 
  2.  Approximately 622 dried blood samples containing malaria parasites (Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum) will be exported from the Lao PDR to the Department of Tropical Medicine and Malaria, National Center for Global Health and Medicine, Japan Institute for Health Security, Japan, for the study of malaria parasite infection status using molecular biology techniques such as PCR and LAMP.
